UA-cam channel of Bert Stephani, photographer, videographer, educator and visual storyteller.
This channel is all about creating: trying new things, behind the scenes, the tools I use, techniques and adventures. The process is more valuable than the end result, therefor this is a place in which the experiment takes center stage. I want to learn and grow so I can't stay within the comfort zone of only the things that I know will work. I value each comment as long as it's done in a polite way.

Cinematic Portraits with the LensGo Smoke B portable fog machine
Creating atmosphere in a portrait shoot with just a handheld smoke machine and an LED light.
Smoke, fog and haze can be a great way to enhance the mood in a portrait shoot. I've been using big smoke machines and hazers for many years but more often than not they are too big and bulky to work on location (and they require plug-in power). So I'm really happy to see a lot of manufacturers come up with a small portable smoke machine. Pergear asked me to test out their Smoke B Portable Fog machine, so I tried it on an intimate portrait shoot with a good friend.
For this shoot, I shot mainly with the Fujifilm GFX50R and the Mitakon 65mm F1.4. I also shot some pictures with my Vintage Minolta 58mm and 85mm lenses.

Portraits with the ZHIYUN Cinepeer CX100 light
Переглядів 1,2 тис.3 місяці тому
I have been looking at battery powered continuous lights for a while to employ in location portraits. So when Zhiyun asked if I wanted to test drive their new Cinepeer CX100 light, I said yes and (so far) used it on two portrait shoots: an outdoor shoot with an artist and an intimate portrait shoot with my friend Chana. For the shoot with Zoteye, I shot with my Fujifilm X-T5 and the XF33mm F1.4...
Fast Prime Lenses on a budget - Sirui Sniper 23, 33 and 56mm for Fujifilm X
Переглядів 12 тис.6 місяців тому
I love my Fujinon fast prime lenses but what if you are on a budget? Sirui asked me if I wanted to test out there new Sniper series of affordable fast lenses. They are releasing a 23, a 33 and a 56mm, all with a maximum aperture of F1.2 I can clearly remember how I started my career on affordable third party lenses so I wanted to test these for those who are in the same shoes that I was in 20 y...
Test Portrait Shoot with the PMI Smoke Ninja (portable smoke machine)
Переглядів 1,4 тис.7 місяців тому
A while ago I backed this kickstarter of the PMI Smoke Ninja portable smoke machine. The unit finally arrived and I did a little test portrait shoot with my girlfriend. I was hoping to create a cinematic haze without lugging around a big haze machine, see for yourself if it's possible with this tiny device. Change the lens on your Fujifilm X100V - (WCL-X100 & TCL-X100)
Переглядів 15 тис.Рік тому
If the 23mm (35mm full frame equivalent) lens of the fixed lens Fujifilm x100-series doesn't suit you, there are two options in the form of converter lenses. The WCL-X100V turns your X100-series camera into a 28mm equivalent camera, like the Leica Q3 and the TCL-X100 gives you a standard 50mm lens. Sample pictures of both converter lenses are at the end of the video. You can also find these pic...
Fujifilm X-S20 - first look

Fujifilm Belgium commissioned me to test out the new X-S20 and share my thoughts on their UA-cam channel. I figured some of you might also be interested in the X-S20 so I wanted to share the video here on my own channel as well. I’m also giving some brief thoughts about the XF8mm F3.5. The X-S20 is very compact and light, yet extremely powerful and versatile. Visit my website for much more: www...
Slow Portraits with Fast Lenses - GFX50R with Mitakon 65mm and vintage lenses
Переглядів 11 тис.Рік тому
Sometimes it's better to slow down instead of relying on the newest and best technology. It makes you focused, creative and allows to build a strong connection to your subject. In this video I take you behind-the-scenes of a slow portrait shoot. i will tell you why it's so beneficial to slow down and I'll talk about the (slow) gear that I used on this shoot: - Fujifilm GFX50R - Mitakon 65mm F1....
A ton of portrait tips (with the Fujifilm X-T5)
Переглядів 50 тис.Рік тому
After my X-T5 review and the launch of the project for Fujifilm Global, I received a lot of questions about the portraits I shot. So I went through the behind-the-scenes footage and compiled a list of portrait tips. The first section is about what I call "Freeflow Portraits", choosing to work with only basic equipment to be in the moment, connect with the subject and be creative. In the second ...

Hi, I’m Bert Stephani and I’m in the middle of moving to a new house but I wanted to make this quick video about a new camera. A little over a week ago, I returned from a short trip to the land of the rising sun. And if you are a Fujifilm fan, you probably know by now that I wasn’t in Tokyo with the purpose of just drinking saké and eating sushi … although I did that too. I was invited to be pa...
Testing the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD for Fujifilm
Переглядів 7 тис.Рік тому
Is that a superzoom or are you just happy to see me? I've always been told that a superzoom is too much of a compromise to use for any serious photography. But when I had the chance to test the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD for Fujifilm X-mount, I took it on a short family camping trip to see for myself how it performs. How did you guys deal with the smell? the fog coming from this machine smells like burnt carbon monoxide.
I enjoyed the process and the images I think the fit the aesthetics, the place and the overall mood. The muted tones, the soft-like focus and the intimacy that comes acorss feels just right. I love moody images so this is perfect for me. Thanks for the detailed explanation :)
Insane that this is free. Thank you
Superb presentation. The best. Many thanks!👍👍👍
I love this device. It's portable and cheap. We all know you can get a better machine if you have deep enough pockets. But the headline hear is the price and the partibility. OK there are a couple of kinks that will most probably get ironed out on the upgrade, but will that then mean a price increase? If it does than I'm happy to stick with this one. Battery life? Was it an issue. Is so what is the solution, Buy 2. They're cheap enough.
2024 Nd i still watch this
Holly heck bro the 2020 thing... maaannn. I Remember favourating this 10 years ago when I was first working with off camera flash.
Nice portraits!

cursing in a review goodbye
Nice video. Music restarting every time is a little tiresome. Maybe lower into the background and raise it back up. But then again Idk, I don't make UA-cam videos 🤷🏾♂️
I love natural light portraits, this video is awesome. Thank you!
I did not understand, how do you soften the light?
Thanks for the video. Indeed I am looking for a battery powered light. But for now the Ledlenser P7R with 1000 Lumen and a homogeneous beam for less then 60 Euro makes it. Should make a test with an umbrella in front of it. Have fun.
PLEASE NOTE: firmware V1.0.6 is out for all 3 lenses. Nice job sir, new subscriber!
My X30 is going strong in 2024.
Mooie video Bert! Knap beeldmateriaal 🤟 De x100 ziet er idd beter uit met wisselbare batterij
Thanks Glenn
5:48, the focus is not off, its simply on the wrong eye. Fuji eye AF will often choose the further away eye if that eye has more light and contrast, so you need to toggle to the other nearest eye. Her further away eye is however perfectly focused and with enough sharpness.
It happens occasionally with native glass but far less than with these lenses.
Good video!
Thanks
What a coincidence I got this suggested. I'm torn now between this model and the FIVERAY 20C. They are a similar price, but this one has more power and no RGB settings while the 20C is much weaker, but with RGB if you want to add effects. It's gonna be tough choosing.
Thanks, keep in mind that this light and the 20C are completely different lights. I love using the small RGB panels for accent light, products, ... But for portraiture (definitely if you have quite some ambient light), something like the CX100 is the better choice.
Did you use a recipe for the black and white portraits or are they edited afterwards in lightroom?
I edit the RAW's with my own preset based on Acros
Nice! This is the photo from the official lens' website page 😊
Indeed, always crazy to see one of my images on their website.
Hi mate, good to see you making videos again. Hope you and the family are all good. If you're ever in Scotland again you know where we are :)
😂Foirst😂
Nice, thank you
This video just popped up on my feed. I think I missed the Deadline.
I want that lens case.
Thank your for this!
My brand new one won’t start, and when it does it dies instantly. Any ideas? ua-cam.com/video/Ezsx5ons5s0/v-deo.htmlsi=m_cKvViZcIh2iYvu
I've read that with some units you have to screw in the tank a bit tighter. Some seem to be not completely screwed in. If that doesn't work, contact PMI or the local distributor.
@@bertstephani None of the tips worked, but PMI sent me a new one! So happy they honored the one year warranty. New unit works exactly as promised.
good to hear@@ShahabZargari
Merci pour cette vidéo. Inspirant…
Loved that my type of gig. I liked the bit about the camera club president too as the great Harry Callahan said "Being a member of a camera club taught me the type of photographer I never wanted to be".

PMI hasn't been fulfilling their Kickstarter orders.
Sad to hear. i had to wait pretty long for mine. Just to be clear, I have no relation with PMI whatsoever, just backed the kickstarter.
Hey there! We really appreciated the concern; besides individual cases of missing address from specific minority of backers, we have fulfilled all orders from our smokeNINJA kickstarter! We have learnt a lot from this process and will continue to improve on our customer service quality. If you know any specific backers who didn't receive their units yet, please let us know immediately!
@@pmi_gear Thanks for clarifying. Mistakes are made by everyone, admitting them, fixing them and then preventing them for happening in the future ... that's the way to go!
Have you noticed that the camera’s IBIS does not function with this lens attached?
I must admit that I haven't tested it. I shot mainly stills at decent shutter speeds during my test.
This is one good video. You just got a new subscriber 😊
Welcome aboard!
You have a real gift for expressing your ideas in a way that will help open the eyes of thousands of people who will watch this video. I have been photographing for two decades and have not seen any video that comes close to how well you have explained this process , how to keep things simple and adapt to any situation that is presented to you on the shooting day and not try to sell me anything. Very well done. Subscribed, and will share with others. Thanks
Thank you, that means a lot to me.
Great video…thanks for sharing
thank you
Great - not only gear talk - video. And indeed, well done both ⚡️
I always try to make it more about what you can do with the gear. :-)
Thanks Bert, indeed, content with value 👌@@bertstephani
Thank you! Refreshingly different and yet to the point! And thank you for the fotoshoot footage, really nice pictures, and what a lovely model. I am just now looking for faster primes below 56mm for a choir concert fotoshoot in a few weeks and so your review came perfectly timed.
Thank you, glad you liked the video
Dumb question, hope someone can help. I'm looking to purchase the gfx 50r and love it for the 65:24 panorama (closest I'll get to xpan). Does anyone know if i can still shoot 65:24 with Minolta lenses?
You definitely can! The X-pan format will get rid of the vignetting in the corners.
@@bertstephani Appreciate the reply. Thanks!
Thank you! The right video for me just now, very inspiring! Love your approach to photography!
Thank you, I'm happy that you got something out of it.
Can u share the recipe of the B&W pictures?
Nothing special really, I almost always shoot RAW and usually start from the Acros Green film sim.
Love the video and the experiment! Some very interesting images, well done Bert (en Kim)!
Thank you Jeroen!
Great lighting. Back to basics!
Thank you

Thank you, very inspiring!
